Collecting and reading data is part of every primary curriculum, and children enjoy it because the questions are about them: favourite fruit, pets, sports and colours. Tally marks teach counting in groups of five, which is faster and safer than counting one by one. Bar graphs then turn those counts into a picture you can compare at a glance. The three levels go from tally marks, to reading a finished bar graph, to drawing one from a tally chart.

Best for ages 6–9

Frequently asked questions

Why are tally marks grouped in fives?

Groups of five can be counted quickly (5, 10, 15…) and make it easy to see if a mark is missing.

From what age?

Tally marks from about 6, reading a bar graph from 6–7, and drawing one from 7–8.

Is there an answer key?

Yes: the numbers for each tally, drawn tallies, and the answers to all graph questions.
