Counting to twenty and understanding what twenty means are different achievements, and children reach them months apart. Reciting the sequence comes first and easily; knowing that the last number said is how many there are — and that the digit 7 stands for that quantity — is the real work these sheets support.
Best for ages 3–6
Most recognise digits around 3 or 4 and write them between 4 and 6. Reversed digits are completely normal up to about seven and usually correct themselves.
Because reciting and counting are different skills. The sequence is a rhyme; understanding that the last word said is the total takes longer. Counting real objects and asking "how many?" is what closes the gap.
