Follow the jump on the number line and write the answer. Pick a level and print.
The number line turns numbers into places and operations into movement: adding is jumping forwards, subtracting is jumping back. That picture stays useful for years — for rounding, negative numbers, fractions and decimals — so it is worth building early, with small numbers and big clear jumps.
Best for ages 5–8
It shows that numbers have an order and a distance between them. Adding and subtracting become movements a child can see, which makes errors easier to spot and fix.
From about 5 with numbers to 10, and up to 20 around 6 or 7. Older children use empty number lines for mental calculations with larger numbers.
They are counting the starting point as the first jump. Ask them to put a finger on the start and count only the hops between numbers.
