A number bond shows a whole and the two parts it splits into: 7 is 4 and 3, and also 5 and 2. The diagram is simple, but it does something written sums do not: it shows addition and subtraction as two views of the same fact. A child who sees that 4 and 3 make 7 also sees that 7 take away 3 leaves 4.
Best for ages 5–8
Pairs of numbers that make a given number, such as 6 and 4 for 10. Shown as a part-part-whole diagram, they connect addition and subtraction.
Because most mental strategies go through ten: 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3. A child who knows the pairs to 10 instantly calculates much faster and with less effort.
Within 10 from about 5, within 20 around 6 or 7, and the tens version (to 100) around 7 or 8.
