Say the word slowly and listen to the first sound. Circle it, write it, or find the last letter.
Hearing the first sound of a word is the skill teachers call phonemic awareness, and it is one of the best predictors of how easily a child will learn to read. These sheets train it with pictures: the child says the word, listens to its first sound and finds the matching letter. The first level offers three letters to choose from, the second asks the child to write it, and the third moves to the last letter, which is harder to hear.
Best for ages 4–7
The last-letter level makes children listen to the whole word, which helps later with spelling.
Words whose first or last letter would be confusing (like œuf in French) are left out of this sheet.
Words starting with أ show أ as the answer; at the last-letter level, ة counts as its own letter.
