Division is the operation children meet last and understand least, because it is really two questions wearing one symbol. "Share 12 between 3" and "how many 3s fit into 12" give the same answer for different reasons. Both are worth saying out loud — and both collapse without secure times tables.

Best for ages 8–11

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need the times tables before dividing?

Yes, and this is the single most common cause of trouble with division. 56 ÷ 7 is only answerable by someone who knows 7 × 8. If division is going badly, the fix is usually more table practice, not more division.

What age is division for?

Typically 8 to 11. Sharing into equal groups can start earlier with objects, but written division belongs after the tables are secure.

Should I teach remainders straight away?

No. Let exact divisions become comfortable first. Remainders introduce a second idea — what is left over — and mixing it in early makes both harder.
