An analogue clock asks a child to read two hands that move at different speeds, on a dial that counts in fives but is labelled in ones. Almost every difficulty with telling time comes from that mismatch — which is why hours are usually easy and "twenty past" is not.
Best for ages 5–9
Whole hours around 5 or 6, half and quarter hours around 6 or 7, and minute precision usually between 7 and 9. Digital time is often read earlier, but it does not replace understanding the dial.
Analogue. A dial shows time as a quantity you can see passing, which is what makes durations meaningful. Digital reading follows easily afterwards; the reverse is much harder.
Because they look similar and move at very different speeds. Cover the minute hand and work only on hours for a while — most of the confusion disappears once each hand is learned separately.
