Addition is where arithmetic starts, and where two different skills get confused. Finding the answer by counting on fingers is a strategy; knowing that 6 + 7 is 13 without pausing is a fact. Children need both, in that order — and the move between them happens through repetition with small numbers, not through bigger ones.
Best for ages 5–9
Roughly 5 to 9. Start with sums inside 10 at five or six, move to 20 once those are quick, and to 100 at about seven or eight.
Not by being told to. Finger counting fades on its own as facts become known. Taking it away early usually produces guessing and anxiety rather than faster recall.
One sheet — around 24 problems — is enough for most children. If concentration goes before the sheet ends, stop there: a half sheet done well beats a full one done resentfully.
