Shapes get their names from their sides: a triangle has 3, a pentagon 5, a hexagon 6. A square and a rectangle both have 4 sides and 4 square corners, but all the sides of a square are the same length. Point to each side with your child and count together.
Young children often recognise a shape only in its “usual” position: a triangle pointing up, a square sitting flat. Shape Detective shows eleven shapes in different colours and slight rotations, and offers look-alike answers — square or rhombus, circle or oval, pentagon or hexagon — so children must look at the properties, not just the overall picture. After each answer, a short line says how many sides and corners the shape has.
Best for ages 4–8
Circle, oval, triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, star and heart.
Look-alike choices make children check properties such as the number of sides or square corners — real geometric thinking.
Yes, our free 2D shapes worksheets let children trace and colour the basic shapes.
