Balance the Scale

Which weight makes both sides equal?

⭐ 0

The equals sign means “balanced”

Many children think “=” means “write the answer next”. The scale shows its real meaning: both sides have the same value. 5 + ? = 9 asks “what do I add to 5 to balance 9?” — a first, friendly step into algebra. Encourage your child to check by adding each side.

⚖️ About this game

Many children think the equals sign means “write the answer next”. The balance scale shows what it really means: both sides have the same value. In this game, weights sit on each pan and one weight is missing; while it is empty the heavier side tips down, and when the right number is chosen the scale levels out. It is a very visual introduction to missing-number problems and to the idea behind equations.

Best for ages 6–11

Frequently asked questions

Is this algebra?

It is the foundation of it. Finding the missing number in 5 + ? = 9 is the same reasoning as solving x + 5 = 9, without letters.

How hard does it get?

It starts with two weights to 10, then three weights to 20, and up to 40 with two weights on each side.

My child adds everything together. What should I do?

Point to the tilting scale: the goal is to make both sides equal, not to find a total. Ask what is missing on the lighter side.
